I would not object to paying full price for a manual, assuming I got the scooter at or below MSRP. The manual is just like buying a part, the dealer pays so much for it, then marks it up to make a profit on it. Dealers are in business to make a profit. But not to rip people off. If it is a price gouging dealer, then I would feel free to rip them off for whatever I can get.
Several times I have gone to the local stealerdealer emporium, the one that sells $3000 Mets, and tried on helmets, jackets, and other things, found what I wanted, then ordered it online for a considerable discount. It's only fair. If they can do it, so can you. I will never buy a Met manual, all the online parts places have excellent schematics of everything, and I am a professional mechanic who gets paid to work on things a lot more complicated than a Met. I do own manuals for several of my vehicles, but they are all third party manuals (Haynes, Clymer, Chilton, Bently,) I'm surprised that nobody makes such a manual for the Met. Maybe they just aren't popular enough (yet) to make it worthwhile.

Actually it is a 2002-2006 manual, shrink-wrapped, with a number of insert making it a 2007 manual, shrink-wrapper, with a number of inserts making it a 2008 manual. It was about a dozen pages that were inserted into the manual (actually stickers that replace the pages in the manual) I went through this exercise of peeling and sticking the replacement pages into the manual a few weeks ago. Interesting to note that one of the changes is the recommended oil viscosity from 10w40 to 10w30. As has been discussed in the maintenance section, the engine didn't change, just the recommended oil.

It's too bad that they don't seem to be recommending what's actually the best for the engine (or at least what WAS the best for the last decade or so), but rather seem to be have ulterior motives (fuel economy numbers perhaps?). With regards to Honda's change in recommended oil viscosity, and an increase in fuel mileage, you are dead on.
While it would not make any difference with just one or a few scooters, with hundreds of thousands of them, it adds up. And yes, Honda, just like other vehicle manufacturer, cares more about fuel mileage than how long their engines last, as long as they make it through the warranty period. That's what this whole deal with the energy conserving ultra thin oils is about.
Honda stopped short of recommending those, because they were afraid the engine would not make it through the warranty period, and they would wind up replacing a lot of engines. Use 10w40, and you'll be fine. The 'no need to warm it up' thing is more of the same. Your engine will still last a lot longer if you warm it up before taking off, I don't care what Honda, any other manufacturer, or the EPA says. On average, using the proper oil, and warming it up will give you 30% more life from your engine. There is no pdf to send you. You have to buy a manual from a dealer or eBay seller or a Met owner who has one to give up, or view it online on the Honda site.

We'd send the pdf doc and make it more direct and easy for you if there was one, but the manual is not available in PDF. There are copyright laws and Honda has been very ungenerous about letting people violate those laws by creating a personal pdf version for folks who won't buy one.
Mrbeefy wrote:wow, is everyone here this pedantic, or just the guys that work for the dealerships? Someone plz pm me the pdf, kthx. I'm about as pro consumer as it is possible to get, and would have no problems with obtaining a manual for my own personal use without paying for it, because I feel I have a right to the information needed to work on what I bought new from a dealer, but I'm not going to start sending copies all over the place. It's kind of like renting movies, if I rent one I really like, I will make a copy for myself before taking it back, but that's as far as it goes. If you have specific questions, there is someone here who can answer them. There is nothing illegal about giving you specs out of the manual, or reading the manual, then describing a procedure in your own words.

But really, working on a Met is kind of like working on a lawn mower, if you know anything about engines and mechanical things, most everything is pretty self explanatory. If you have a question you would like answered, post it in the maintenance and repair section. If someone wants to loan me a Met for a few months, I will do what Haynes does, completely dissassemble it, then reassemble it, and write my own manual complete with pictures in the process. Since when have we as Americans started putting such a low cost on our integrity? Distributing an electronic copy of the Honda Service manual is straightforward illegal. There's no question about it - Illegal.
If you can't pay $40 dollars to keep your integrity and honesty, there's something wrong. We Americans have been granted amazing opportunities. There have been many posts that have tried to rationalize this as being some deserved right that we have as consumers to have the service manual for free. We've paid the 2 thousand dollars or so for the bike; we've (hopefully) followed all the laws to properly register (if required) and paid the money to do so; We've invested in the proper safety equipment: Surely I'm 'entitled' to the service manual without the $40 dollar price tag - WRONG!!! We are entitled to nothing: you want something - work for it: its as simple as that.
We are now living in a society that promotes the demise of hard work and labor for the things that we need or want. Instead, we have become 'entitled', and expect our hard working neighbors to provide it for us and the government to make them do it. Or, why not just take the video games, movies, mps3's, service manuals from your favorite torrent site or other distribution website illegally and rob the makers of said product from the fruit of their labors. That's just selfishness and pride and gets us only misery. This kind of dishonesty and lack of integrity makes me sick. I'll say one more thing: The genuinely happy individual is always the one who is honest and filled with integrity.
Not only is he happy, but he (or she) will have genuine friends because they know they are always dealt with honesty and that this individual is trustworthy. If you're going to slip in what seems like such an insignificant act of dishonesty like stealing a service manual from the web, it shows in other areas of your life as well. It is in the little things that a man's (or woman's) true character can be seen.
